Crystal/Rock/Stone Tidbits

Agate, Crazy Lace

Agates, in general, are a banded chalcedony.  They are quartz based, tend to be translucent, and are often very colorful.

Crazy lace agate comes only from Chihuahua, Mexico.  This was a volcanic region, and the crazy lace agate is formed from layers of ash and lava that have been deposited over millions of years.

The different colors and patterns are dues to different minerals - the red and orange colors are due to the presence of iron oxide, while the green and blue colors are due to the presence of copper oxide, etc.

Crazy Lace Agate helps us better understand the different "layers" or "eras" of our personalities and how they fit together and build upon each other to make us who we are today.

Agate, Snakeskin

Agates, in general, are a banded chalcedony.  They are quartz based, tend to be translucent, and are often very colorful.

Also known as Crackle Agate or Crackle Carnelian.

These agates are first thermally shock treated to create the scale pattern then heated to brighten and enhance the color.

Amethyst

The energy of the mother we all wished we had.  She gently pulls from us, and into herself, harmful energies such as fear, anxiety, anger, & frustration.  Because of this, many people feel she is helpful to those struggling to manage negative thought and behavior patterns.

Amethyst is photosensitive, so avoid direct sunlight for extended periods of time.

Amethyst is fairly high maintenance and should be cleansed and recharged regularly (think moonlight).

Angelite

Also known as Blue Anhydrite.  it is an anhydrous calcium sulfate with a hardness of 3.5 on the Mohs scale.

A supportive line of communication to the angelic realm.

Both water and salt can easily damage angelite.

Apophyllite

The name, Apophyllite, comes from the Greek for "away from" (apo) and "leaf" (phyllos), due to the way it flakes off when heated due to loss of water in its structure.

Apophyllite is most commonly clear to white.  However it's color can vary greatly, including colorless, white, grey, green, brown, pink, purple, red and orange

It never need to be cleansed or recharged.

Aragonite, Star Cluster

Chrysoprase

Chrysoprase is a type of green chalcedony.  Chalcedony is quartz based, tends to be translucent, and comes in several colors.

Chrysoprase gets its color from small amounts of nickle in the chalcedony.

The name "chrysoprase" is from the Greek words for "golden apple".

Chrysoprase is a stone of the heart and tender new beginnings.

Citrine

Citrine is the yellow to red-orange variety of crystalline quartz.

Natural citrine is quite rare.  Most citrine on the market is heat treated smoky quartz (which produces light to medium yellows) or amethyst which produces stronger yellows and orange-red to orangey brown shades).

Natural citrines are usually shades of pale yellow color, often with smoky tones.

Citrine is a stone of the Earth chakras or the lower three chakras (Root, Sacral, Solor Plexus).  It never needs cleansing or recharging.  Citrine constantly transmutes all negative energy it comes in contact with into neutral, usable energy.

Many of fluorite's properties depend upon its color or color combination.  Generally, fluorite is usefull for bringing order (think getting your ducks in a row) and manifestation.

Garnet

Garnets are a group of silicate minerals instead of one specific  mineral. All species of garnets possess similar physical properties and crystal forms, but differ in chemical composition. The different species are pyrope (red), almandine (orange-red to purple-red), spessartine (yellowish orange), grossular (light green), uvarovite (deep green) and andradite (black).

The name comes from the Latin word "Garanatus," meaning 'seedlike' in reference to a pomegranate.

Garnet's properties depend upon its color and type/mineral makeup.  Generally, garnet is strongly associated with the heart - both physically and symbolically.

Goldstone

Goldstone is a man made "stone" first made in Italy.

"Reddish brown goldstone is made by heating molten glass to a temperature that is hot enough to dissolve granules of copper oxide that are added to the melt. After the copper oxide is completely dissolved, the melt is allowed to cool very slowly. This slow cooling gives copper ions in the melt adequate time find one another and grow into octahedral-shaped copper crystals. The slower the cooling, the larger the copper crystals.

The glass of reddish brown goldstone is colorless. Its reddish brown appearance is caused by reflections from the included copper crystals. Blue, green, and purple goldstone are made using compounds of metals other than copper. The color of these goldstones is caused by the color of the glass rather than the color of the reflections from the metallic crystals. The glass color of blue goldstone is caused by cobalt, green is caused by chromium, and purple is caused by manganese." - geology.com
